Microsporum gallinae

Microsporum gallinae is a rare causative agent of Tinea corporis in human.

Cultures of Microsporum gallinae on mycobiotic agar are flat with a suede - like texture and are white with a pinkish tinge in color. Some cultures show radial folding. An orange-pink reverse pigment is usually present.

Ecology

Microsporum gallinae is a cosmopolitan fungus which is considered as a zoophilic dermatophyte primarily associated with fowl.

 

Pathogenicity and Health Effects
Microsporum gallinae is a known causative agent of dermal infection in fowl, particularly chickens and turkeys.   

Macroscopic Appearance

Ø      Growth rate is moderately rapid and diameter of colonies ranges from 1 to 3 cm. incubated on Sabouraud dextrose agar at 25°C for 7 days;

Ø      Colonies are moderately wrinkled and with velvety to wooly or cottony texture; and

Ø      The surface colony color is white to gray turning pink to buff as it matures and the reverse is observed with diffusing deep strawberry – red pigment.

 

Microscopic Appearance

Ø      Septate hyphae, macroconidia and macroconidia are present;

Ø      Macroconidia are club – shaped, commonly curved or narrow at the tip, with a smooth or echinulate cell wall containing 2 to 10 cells, and may be rare or numerous; and

Ø      Microconidia are ovoid to pyriform in shape, unicellular, and may be rare or numerous.
