Trichophyton equinum on Sabouraud's dextrose agar with 0.5% yeast extract.

Cultures are usually flat, suede - like to downy in texture and white to buff in color, similar to T. mentagrophytes. Cultures usually have a deep - yellow submerged fringe and reverse, which later becomes dark red in the centre.

Ecology

Trichophyton equinum is a zoophilic dermatophyte which is primarily in association with the horse. Trichophyton exists in two varieties namely, Trichophyton equinum var. equinum which is distributed worldwide, and Trichophyton equinum var. autotrophicum which can only be found in Australia and New Zealand.

Pathogenicity and Health Effects
Trichophyton equinum is a common cause of dermatophytosis infection in the horse and it rarely infects humans.

Macroscopic Appearance

Ø Growth rate is moderately rapid and colonies have a downy texture; and

Ø Surface colony color is pale yellow while the reverse is deep yellow becoming reddish brown.

Microscopic Appearance

Ø Microconidia are pyriform – shaped, are formed along the hyphae, and are appear rarely in re – branching clusters; and

Ø Macroconidia are fusiform to club – shaped which are similar to those of Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and are only present rarely.
